Best Survival Guns: Handguns, Shotguns and Rifles for the Survivalist

What makes a good survival gun? Well, there's no one perfect survival gun, because each life-or-death situation is different. But at the very least, it should thrive in tough conditions and shoot commonly available ammo. It also doesn't hurt if the gun is affordable and the rounds it shoots are affordable enough to allow for lots of target practice.
With that in mind, I have carefully considered reliability and durability when making my picks for this survival guns gallery. I also looked at ammunition as a major factor in the selection of these guns. In the event of an emergency, a firearm that requires some exotic round could leave a person defenseless when his supply runs out.

Hunting Small Game

In an actual wilderness survival situation, you may need to live off the land, and that means we can’t overlook small game.

There are a lot more squirrel, rabbit, possum and other varmints around than there are deer. Dropping a ten point buck might feed the family for weeks, but those will be few and far between if times get         Squirrel, on the other hand, are rats with cute tails, and we have no rat population problems. Dropping three or four squirrels (or rabbits) every few days can get your family by in a pinch.

But in the small game arena, there are many excellent rifles, each firing a variety of respectable calibers.

You could look at the .17 HMR cartridge, a very flat shooting, very high velocity round and realize it’s the be all and end all of the varmint rounds. You may also become intrigued by the .22 Magnum for its power over the standard .22LR. This cartridge is fired by great rifles and is excellent as long as you can run down to Academy Sports or Wal-Mart and buy another box of shells.

When the big box stores run dry, these more exotic calibers will be useless unless you’ve got a large stockpile of ammo storage. But wait, you say. These cartridges are available at the local. big box store, and the .22 LR is always sold out. And you’re right – however, let’s look at the reasons why.

Build a #10 Can ROCKET STOVE: It Cooks an Entire Meal With Twigs!

Everytime I’ve done an emergency fair, the most popular alternative cooking method that I demonstrate has been the Rocket Stove (by a long shot)! People LOVE this one, including me! It has immediately shot to the top of my FAVORITE’s list and something I recommend EVERYONE should add to their emergency supplies!

Why? Mainly because…
A handful of twigs can cook an ENTIRE MEAL!

And if you use the design below it fits anywhere, only weighs about 1 lb, very portable, easy to use, practically free, great for camping,…. Shall I go on? No… lets just go ahead and make one!
Grab Some Scraps and Make a ROCKET STOVE! A huge thanks to Brock, who is an Organic Wellness Doctor by day, and a Rocket Stove engineer by night. I got my first Rocket Stove from him, because lets face it, I was NEVER going to get around to making one.He was nice enough to let me invite myself over to his workshop and be totally obnoxious with my picture-taking.

5 Reasons to Learn Bow Hunting for Survival.

Learning how to hunt with a bow and arrow, especially with a focus on stealth hunting and tracking, is one of the most valuable skills a prepper can have.

Chances are, if you’re reading this, that isn’t you. What if the unthinkable happens and you have to figure out how to hunt for your own food? Bullets eventually disappear, and sometimes you need stealth instead.

Seven tips for surviving the apocalypse.

Billionaires who have made their fortunes in Silicon Valley seem to be worried about the future. So worried in fact, that some of them are reportedly buying vast estates in places such as New Zealand, as “apocalypse insurance”. Boltholes to head to in the event of doomsday scenarios such as nuclear attack or global political meltdown.
But what about the rest of us? What should the non-billionaires of the world do if we haven’t prepared at all? How do we go about making and doing everything for ourselves once again, and help post-apocalyptic society avoid another Dark Age – and reboot civilisation? As a scientist, this is the thought experiment I chose to explore in my book, The Knowledge. So here are my seven top tips for getting to grips with a global catastrophe…

Survival Hunting Tips.

To endure the extreme conditions of a survival situation, animal fats and proteins must be eaten regularly, and survival hunting is an essential skill. Such situations are a drain on a person's energy. Potentially inclement weather forces your body to metabolize calories at an increased rate to stay warm, and performing the physical tasks needed to take care of your body uses a lot of energy. The concentrated calories from wild edible animals obtained through survival hunting are an efficient way to keep the internal fire burning.

In the wilderness, the most practical and accessible wild animals are small game, fish, reptiles and amphibians and invertebrates. These animals make the most sense to pursue and harvest in a survival hunting situation. First, they make up for their size with quantity of individuals in a given area. Second, they require very little weapon technology to harvest—some require only the hands of the gatherer.

How To Create The Ultimate Camping Survival Kit

Like with any other area in life, disaster can strike while you’re out camping. Maybe you end up getting lost in the woods, you suffer an injury preventing you from hiking out, your canoe drifts away during the night while camping in the BWCA or one of many other things that could happen while out camping. More so than almost any other situation, you need to be ready with a camping survival kit for when disaster strikes in the wilderness.
Creating a basic survival kit to take along on your camping trips is absolutely essential, but it doesn’t require the same gear that a bug out bag or home survival kit may require. You have to remember, if you’re already out camping, you most likely have a tent, stove and other gear that would be considered survival gear in many situations. The goal of a camping survival kit is to make sure you have a basic set of additional gear and supplies that will not only get you through your camping trip, but get you through an extra 5-7 days and a variety of extra circumstances.

How to Build an Emergency Food Supply.

With that goal in mind, let me say this:  this is not a list of items intended for deep storage. Nor is it a list of items packaged so that they have a 25 year shelf life.  (And in reality, do you really need your stored food to last that long?)  I am also not going to list items that might be foreign to your palate, difficult to find, or too costly to absorb into your weekly shopping budget.
What you are going to get is a list of 20 items that can easily be purchased at your local grocery store, warehouse club and surprisingly, even online at Amazon.  They can be purchased in one shot, all at once, or you can pick up one item from the list each week over a period of twenty weeks.  The choice is yours.  All I ask is that you consider getting each of the items on the list and that you also consider getting started sooner rather than later.  I promise you that this will be easy.

Common Edible Plants in the American Deserts.

Prickly pear cactus
The prepper mentality calls for a full state of preparedness for any eventuality that might be dangerous or even life-threatening. These can come in a wide range possibility, covering both natural disasters and man-made dangers. However, some areas are a dangerous place for anyone and they have been this way since the dawn of time. The deserts are one of the most infamous such areas and they have been rightly feared ever since man started to venture into them. In this regard, the US is no different with a great percentage of its territory being of a desert type. Saying a desert is an inhospitable place is a great understatement because these areas are not just dangerous but often turn deadly for those who get lost inside of them.
The same comes as a combination of different factors, like the heat and a lack of both food and water. For a prepper, being knowledgeable about desert survival is an absolute necessity and many generations of wilderness survival experts have focused on deserts in particular. In these environments, the key element is the ability to find food and water and stop the rapid degradation of the person’s physical condition under those extreme natural condition. With that in mind, here is an overview of the common edible plants in American deserts that will help any prepper in a survival situation.

6 Hidden Underground Shelters that Will Survive Doomsday.

There are a lot of ways to go about creating a hidden underground shelter.  This post isn’t meant to tell you how to make your own shelter.  That would be foolish because everyone has completely different needs when it comes to security.  Rather, I want to show you some examples of hidden underground shelters so you can get ideas for your own secure survival shelter.

Why I'm an “Everyday” Prepper

Let me get all my cards on the table. I don’t live off the grid. I don’t have any guns stashed away. There is never going to be a zombie apocalypse. And Cuba will not invade the United States.

What I am prepared for is losing my job, losing public utilities like gas, electric and water, a sudden and horrific natural disaster, a riot and finally an active shooter in my neighborhood. If a zombie actually shows up at my door I’m probably screwed.

I’ve lost a job a couple of times over my lifetime and I’m young enough for that to occur a couple more times. Changing jobs is similar to losing a job because there may be a short period of time where the old wages stopped and the new wages haven’t kicked in yet.

It doesn’t matter how long you’re out of work or short on money you must be prepared for it. An emergency money fund will help see you through these types of events and is something you need to have. Every year should see you putting at least two week’s wages in cash into a safe place. The first year on a new job make sure you put away at least three to four week’s wages.

Having a stocked pantry goes a long way should you lose your job or face an economic emergency. Your number one goal should be building up a 3-6 month supply of food so your family doesn’t go hungry during an emergency.

With cash on hand and plenty of food stocks in the pantry you can weather at least a month without working under the table or for pocket money. You might even want to sharpen some skills that could help like learning how to do small jobs for neighbors where you can earn good money while still giving yourself plenty of time to send out resumes and secure a new job.

A few years ago my family lived in an area that discovered the groundwater was contaminated. First thing to be wiped out was all the water at the grocery stores. Bottled soft drinks and juices are no substitute for real filtered water. By having a 5-6 months of drinking water on hand that situation should not be a problem. You can still shower in slightly contaminated water as well as flush your toilet.

Downed power or broken gas lines are usually repaired in less than two days. Be prepared to use your frozen and refrigerated food first should it be announced that power won’t be restored within 24 hours.

I am also prepared for a riot. Riots rarely break out all over a neighborhood or town at the same time. There is a starting point and it can quickly escalate and spread to where you live.

Being prepared for this situation, at least in my case, means having the car ready to go and making sure we have a ‘bug out’ bag for each one of us in a convenient place. I also have my valuable papers, cash and expensive jewelry in a small  fireproof safe ready to go at minute’s notice.

Home invasions are one of the most common crimes we face today; make sure you, your family, and your home are ready to face the threat. As I mentioned before I have no guns in the house. What I do have are strategically placed knives, small wooden bats, rolls of quarters that I can wrap my hands around and my neighbors phone numbers entered into Alexa.

If you are wanting to be armed, consider learning how to use a firearm and carrying one for protection. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy who has one and knows how to use it.

Fires and floods are one of the most common disasters a person will face in their lifetime. Unfortunately, it’s a threat that receives very little attention. Being prepared for this everyday type of event takes planning. One of the best ways to prepare yourself and your family for is to conduct periodic emergency safety drills. Even if it's just you and spouse in the house, learning where to run in case of a fire in different parts of the house could mean the difference between life and burning to death.

When it comes to an active shooter situation all I can say is that being aware of your surroundings is probably the best defense against being shot. A mall has many stores and active shooters can’t be all of them at once. If you shop at the same stores, malls and shopping centers on a regular basis, play a game with yourself looking for the best place to duck for cover in each. It’s a silly little exercise that may save your life.

You can bet an active shooter is looking for easy targets and by being prepared to run to your predetermined hiding place may prove to be the best silly little game you’ve ever played.

I may not be a ‘real’ prepper like some folks but I am prepared for a lot of real life situations but not zombies.

The End of the World Survival Guide: Staying Alive During the Zombie Apocalypse.

End of the World Scenario #1: Zombie Apocalypse
Coming up on December 21st, 2019, the Mayan calendar will have finished its great 5,125-year-long cycle. This has fueled worldwide speculation as to what will happen on that fateful day, the most popular outcome obviously being death to us all.

Worries of mass extinction spurred NASA scientists to actually study and analyze the possibilities of what could happen on 12/21/2019. They concluded that there's nothing out of the ordinary, except for the normal December solstice. There is no scientific evidence to support any claims of an impending apocalypse, so where does that leave us?

Making Your Own Jeep Survival Kit.

In August 2012, the Discovery Channel debuted a reality survival TV show titled One Car Too Far. The five-part series featured former British special forces operative Gary Humphrey, self-proclaimed gear-head Bill Wu, and a 2002 Jeep Wrangler in special survival situations set in the mountainous Chilean wilderness. During the course of each episode, the duo, along with their trusty Jeep, employed established survival techniques and MacGyver-like mechanical tricks to solve problems and get back to civilization. Lots of survival shows have aired in the past, but never one using a vehicle like a Jeep Wrangler as the focus of the show.
The show’s main appeal–aside from featuring a red TJ–was how the two tackled problems using everyday items and things you can find in the wild. On one episode the two successfully used an egg to repair a cracked radiator, while on another, they used a log to repair a broken axle. The show not only taught viewers essential survival skills, but also how to think outside the box to solve problems. A great byproduct of the show was that it got me thinking about my own Jeep adventures and what were to happen if I ever got into trouble on some distant 4×4 trail here in the American Southwest. What tools and items would I need to get me back on the road? What items would I need to survive two or three days in the wilderness in the event of a “bug out” scenario, major breakdown, or accident?

6 Key Emergency Survival Tips From Wilderness Experts

Hypothermia
Rule No. 1: Exercise if you're freezing cold. It will warm you up. Rule No. 2: Disregard rule No. 1 if you're in the water. With hypothermia, blood vessels constrict, reducing the supply of warm blood to the skin. That keeps internal organs warm—which is what you want. But forcing those vessels open by exercising in the water pushes the warm blood to the surface, where it quickly gets chilled. If you're immersed in water, stay still.
Lightning
Some 600 people are struck every year; about 60 are killed. First, the common-sense rules: Don't be—or be near—the tallest object around, and get rid of metal objects that are in contact with your skin. As a last resort, experts suggest squatting with just the balls of your feet on the ground. Cover your ears, close your mouth and eyes, and hope the bolt rolls over you.

14 Survival Vehicles for Your End of Days Commute

Those of us in industrialized nations are mostly inured from the ravages and strife that infect large portions of the globe. While we live in a cozy bubble that we believe will never falter or fail, it’s shocking how fast the civilized world can degrade into utter chaos. A long-term blackout, a major storm, a disease outbreak, and a thousand other catastrophes can leave us helpless. Helpless, that is, unless we’re prepared.
Those among us who hope for the best and prepare for the worst are going to be the ones who ultimately survive, when our corner of the world collapses. While you may be fortunate enough to never experience the need to flee from your home to seek shelter elsewhere, through bands of roving marauders or the walking dead; if you do, you’d better be ready.

Survival Resources

Hey guys, Elise here! Thomas and I have been working at this blog for quite some time now, and as a result, have gained a lot more knowledge with regards to the survival industry and what we feel qualify as some excellent online survival resources.
This page was once an incoherent mishmash – a mere compilation of different survival-related websites and resources that we found online and thought might be useful for those who come across this blog to check out. It was organized similarly, but without much input from us. I decided I’d take the time to reorganize the page, add some commentary, and make it a much better overall survival resource for those who may be interested in a particular aspect of survival.

1993-2000 Harley-Davidson MT350E

An unusual bike for the Harley brand, but this was back in its heyday when the Milwaukee company was booming and expanding in every direction. Over in Europe, the NATO countries had asked for a motorcycle to be used by the military, and the MT500 and MT350 were the result. These were rugged, rudimentary, dual-purpose motorcycles powered by Austrian-made Rotax engines in an Italian SWM frame, and put together with pieces from half-a-dozen members of the European Union. Armstrong-CCM Motorcycles in England built a number of these for use by troops in the 1982 Falklands War, and in 1987 sold the design and production rights to Harley-Davidson.
Apparently Harley thought it would be patriotic to produce this NATO-approved motorbike in the U.S., and since the company had recently gone public and its coffers were bulging, it could well afford this minor expenditure—though the figure that was paid to Armstrong appears to be top secret. At the Pennsylvania factory, a separate production line was set up after R&D spent a couple of years improving the 350 version, adding disc brakes and an electric starter, though the left-side kickstarter was maintained. Electrifying the 500 would have required major frame modifications, so that model was never produced.

Best Ways To Invest Your Money Rather Than The Bank

Preppers Are Getting Ready for the Barackalypse

When I run into the 73-year-old Texan 10 days before the November election, America’s most celebrated self-reliance guru seems better suited for an early bird special than a black swan event. The only hint of his notoriety is a patch over his left breast depicting his professional alter ego—”Doctor Prepper.”
Stevens’ book, Making the Best of Basics, may be the closest thing the survival industry has to a bible (aside from the actual Bible). It has sold more than 800,000 copies since hitting the shelves at Kmart during the gas crisis in 1974. Stevens is not actually a doctor, and, come to think of it, he’d rather you not call him a “prepper,” which he considers a slur meant to impugn self-reliant folks like himself as paranoid loons. But it’s become part of the lexicon, and Stevens is somewhat paranoid about where the United States is headed (he foresees a borderline tyrannical second Obama term that begins with massive gun confiscation and ends who-knows-where), so he’s rolling with it. As he puts it, “I don’t really like cuss words, but I know how to use them and I know what they mean.” Besides, it’s good for business.

Three Proven Ways to Open Food Cans without a Can Opener

Canned food is one of the key ingredients to any successful preparedness strategy. Many survival situations include individuals and families using cans in cases like natural or man-made emergencies. But, while there is no denying the usefulness of canned goods, they come with one major potential issue. All cans are made from sturdy metal and are designed to keep its content in good shape in almost any environment.
Also, most cans are meant to be open only using the proper tool like a can opener or an equivalent inside of a multi-tool. While these objects are regularly found in almost any home, an emergency situation might leave an individual or a group of people without any of them. In this setup, it is very important for a prepper to know how to open a can without the proper tool. After all, getting to their content might be a question of life and death.       Modern-day survivalists aren't generally regarded as the most sane people on the planet. A quick look at any one of the disturbingly common and frighteningly thorough shopping lists they post online drives home the fact that anyone who self-identifies as a "prepper" most likely went off the deep end a long time ago. Sure, it's fine to keep a few extra cans of food and cases of water around for an emergency, but if you start adding body armor and butt paste to your stash, you might want to tell George Miller that it's time to see other people.
However, a closer look at these lists reveals some of the weirder things they suggest you hoard aren't as crazy as you think. Maybe this underground bunker full of tinfoil hats will come in handy after all. For example ...

If there are only moments to spare, you need to know how to react to everything from an earthquake to a tornado and a flood to hurricane. Study up on the basics so you can be decisive during the destruction.

* Earthquake
Crawl under a sturdy table and cover your face and head with your arms. Stay away from windows and large bureaus or bookcases that could fall. If you become trapped under debris, cover your mouth with a cloth or shirt, and tap against a pipe or other object to make noise. (Don't yell for help unless you have to; you risk inhaling dangerous quantities of dust.) If you are able, leave the building once the shaking stops--aftershocks can bring down a structure compromised by the initial quake. Finally, if you're outside during the quake, steer clear of buildings and utility wires.

Why you need survival weapons

survival weapons are a necessity when it comes to camping, nature hikes, practicing bushcraft, hunting or even prepping for an apocalyptic catastrophe to occur.  There are several different types of weapons, and reasons as to why you should maintain and possess a quality amount of them.  With pistols and rifles, though effective for hunting and self defense, you come into a problem of limited use if you do not have the ability or know how to create your own ammo.  They are also very loud if you don’t want to give away your position.
However, they are effective and useful to have in tight situations and, as previously mentioned, hunting for food. Rope is both effective as a weapon, and as a self defense weapon. However the reasons surrounding the need for these survival items are not common knowledge to all. Regardless as to what the situation is when the idea or use of weapons of survival may occur, one common reason remains the same, self preservation. It is not only human instinct to survive, it is our purpose in life.
