10 TIPS FOR WILDERNESS SURVIVAL

Sometimes we forget how easy we have it. Amid our crazy life schedules we tend to take for granted that purified bottle of water when thirsty, or the push of a button to light a fire. But it’s important to remember that in the blink of an eye, it can all be gone. The unexpected happens, you get in an accident or lose your way; now, it’s just you and the wilderness with no ties to civilization. Here are ten basic survival tips to get you prepared- just in case.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Please please please tell someone where you are going before you set off for a trip. No matter where you go, even if you end up stranded unexpectedly, you started from somewhere in civilization. Tell close friends and family where you are going and if you have a specific route or amount of time you will be gone.

10 Amazing Off Grid Homes that You Can Get Today.

Most of us know by now that it is possible to go 100% off-the-grid with your home.  We also know the many benefits of going off the grid: It’s better for the planet, your utility bills are cheaper or free, and (as disaster preppers know), going off grid frees you from dependency on the vulnerable power grid.
However, most of the off grid homes we see are either really rustic (think outdoor latrine) or really complicated (think expensive wind turbines and other systems).

If the grid goes down, the ability to defend oneself will be invaluable. In fact, the importance of self-defense will be right up there with food and water. Of course, a firearm is the most effective way to defend yourself from an attacker, but that might not always be possible. For example, if you find yourself in a place where firearms aren’t allowed.
The purpose of this article is to teach you about the many other types of weapons you can use to defend yourself. You can carry most of these anywhere without drawing any unwanted attention, yet they’re effective enough to take down almost anyone. Here, then, are 9 weapons that could save your life:

Top Survival Weapons.

Why you need survival weapons
Survival weapons are a necessity when it comes to camping, nature hikes, practicing bushcraft, hunting or even prepping for an apocalyptic catastrophe to occur.  There are several different types of weapons, and reasons as to why you should maintain and possess a quality amount of them.  With pistols and rifles, though effective for hunting and self defense, you come into a problem of limited use if you do not have the ability or know how to create your own ammo.  They are also very loud if you don’t want to give away your position.
However, they are effective and useful to have in tight situations and, as previously mentioned, hunting for food. Rope is both effective as a weapon, and as a self defense weapon. However the reasons surrounding the need for these survival items are not common knowledge to all. Regardless as to what the situation is when the idea or use of weapons of survival may occur, one common reason remains the same, self preservation. It is not only human instinct to survive, it is our purpose in life.

Disaster Survival Planning Checklist.

Your planning should see your family through a minimum of fourteen days of survival. Fourteen days will statistically see your family through 96% of known disaster emergency situations. Seven days will only get you through 50% of known disaster situation. Consider more than fourteen days of survival for locally known situations where your area can be physically cut off from resupply for very long durations (seismic areas, land/snow/mud slide areas, below sea level areas, flood planes, low lying island areas and areas of difficult or single method access, for example by bridge, single road, boat, plane, trail, or by horse/mule access only).
The 2004 Florida Hurricanes had some home areas without power for up to 22 days, but the area residents had access to vehicles and could travel to other towns for supplies. New Orleans' Hurricane Katrina demonstrated the good and the bad for planning and preparation.

10 Survival Skills You Need To Know.

How To Signal for Help
"If you have a whistle, use a one-two-three, pause, one-two-three pattern. This is more recognizable to the human ear. Mirrors are also important. Nothing in nature can be mistaken for a signal mirror. Same goes for brightly colored construction tape." — Thomas Coyne, found and chief instructor, Survival Training School of California

How small businesses should prepare for natural disasters.

After a long summer of employee vacations (and, let's face it, scant motivation to stay inside and work), September is an exciting time for small businesses ripe with renewed energy. But in some parts of the country, September brings a dark reminder, too: hurricane season.
To give you a sense of a worst-case scenario: Hurricane Katrina, among the worst storms in U.S. history, wreaked $21.1 billion in business-related losses, excluding flood claims, according to Property Claims Service. The odds of a small business getting back on its feet after such a storm is not good: FEMA estimates nearly 40 percent of small businesses won't reopen after enduring a natural disaster.

5 Ways to Prepare Your Business for Natural Disasters.

Disasters can strike businesses at any time and take almost any shape: A flood takes out a startup’s servers. A founder is imprisoned. A tornado destroys the office building. Whether it’s a natural disaster, a PR scandal or something else altogether, not being ready can add another level of devastation to an entrepreneur’s life.
I know this firsthand. My company, ONTRAPORT, endured the Santa Barbara fires and aftermath that started in late 2017 and ravaged into this year. We also had shifts on our accounting team that resulted in me trying my hand at accounting (not my forte). Needless to say, 2018 has been a year of unexpected change and destruction -- both of my team’s physical surroundings and our “usual” way of doing things.

21 Things To Do Before and After a Flood.

Recently I was reading about the flooding in Louisiana (which is now considered the worst US disaster since Hurricane Sandy), and it occurred to me that my site doesn’t have a single article about how to deal with floods. Well, I’m fixing that right now. There are bound to be plenty more disastrous floods in the future, so if you live in or near a flood zone, you need to know what to do.
Floods are unlike any other natural disaster. They tend to linger for days or weeks while other natural disasters are over and done within a matter of minutes. You will typically get a warning of a flood unless it’s a flash flood; but even then, heavy rain is a good sign that there will be some flooding.

HOW TO SURVIVE A FLOOD: FLOOD SAFETY TIPS.

Flooding is caused by major storms and rising water levels, causing rivers, lakes, and other waterways to overflow. Especially susceptible areas include valleys, plains, swamplands, and anywhere near large bodies of water.

FLOOD SAFETY TIPS
Be Prepared
Continue to listen to the radio or television for information. Know the difference between a flood “watch” and “warning.” A “flood watch“ means a flood is possible in your area. A “flood warning” means flooding is already occurring or will occur soon—and you should be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.

Best Handgun Calibers For Survival.

Is there really a “best” of anything?  Well, yeah, I think A-1 steak sauce is the absolute best.  I love St. Pete’s Best SHTF pistolSignature blue cheese.  Diamond D Leather in Alaska makes the best across the chest crossdraw handgun holster on Earth.

I am a huge fan of Kimber 1911 pistols, Smith and Wesson heavy revolvers and ARs in 5.56 and 300 Blackout, and my Ruger SR556-6.8 SPC AR (just try to find one of those left on the shelf), which I clearly think are the best.  Well, at least those are the best for me anyway.

M6 SURVIVAL RIFLE: THE ULTIMATE SURVIVAL GUN?

THIS SPECIAL FIREARM WAS DESIGNED TO HELP U.S. AIR FORCE CREWS SURVIVE PLANE CRASHES
The subject of “the ultimate survival gun” is often hotly debated. Some argue that a simple and reliable bolt-action .22 rifle is ideal, while others prefer the added range and stopping power of an AR-15. Others still may say a concealed handgun would be best, or that a shotgun is what you’d really want to stop criminals in their tracks. Depending on your situation and other gear, we could see some validity to each of these choices.

Interestingly, the U.S. Air Force established a design for an all-in-one survival gun back in the 1950s. This firearm was called the M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon, and it incorporated elements from both ends of the spectrum above. The M6 is actually chambered in two calibers: .22 Hornet and .410 bore shotgun.

20 Useful Tips For Surviving A Zombie Apocalypse

Stephen Hawking recently stated that our planet is in a serious state of crisis and that even the next 60 years have become highly difficult to predict. We could be facing a number of catastrophic events in the not-so-distant future and it has become difficult to narrow down what we are up against. A Zombie apocalypse is one scenario that has been constantly played out in pop culture and we have learnt a lot from it. Here is a useful summary of the information available on the topic of taking on a zombie apocalypse, just in case the unthinkable happens.

Zombies are predictable beings after a certain period of time. Sure, they are dangerous, but with the right preparation you will be able to take them at some point. Human beings, however, are far less predictable. They can be surprisingly cunning when they have their backs up against a wall. Approach with caution at all times.

The 5 Very Best Survival Guns

The 5 Very Best Guns For Survival Before I begin this list, I have to make a disclaimer. I am a gun guy. I like AK-47s, AR-15s, M1As, and just about anything that will take a BIG magazine and send lots of hot lead down range as fast as I can pull the trigger.

I like tactical toys like chest rigs with a gazillion magazine pouches riding over a plate carrier, I like ‘em with an integrated pistol belt that holds a large frame semi-automatic pistol and even more magazine pouches. I like these things a lot, and I can envision a time when all of this might come in handy, but for the moment it’s just FUN!

Fear Matters to Security: Control & Use It to Your Advantage

If aliens exist and by happenstance were to glance down on our tiny planet, I think they would be shocked by the order of things. We humans are the dominant species on this little blue planet. Not lions, tigers, or bears, but us. Relatively small with inferior muscle mass compared to other predators and generally mediocre protection from the reality of violence. And yet, we rule this planet with no challenge from any other predators.

Some eco groups like to argue we are magically custodians of this planet due to our opposable thumbs and intelligence and whilst yes, those do help, I think the core difference between us and base animals is our innate tenacity and fear. We humans, we fear a lot. We fear the unknown, the things we do know, other people, the lack of other people, and quite honestly, everything in between. As a species we have harnessed our fears, using them to push through, adapt, evolve, and ultimately become the ultimate predator.

HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED FOR DISASTERS LIKE HURRICANE HARVEY.

We require all of our advisors to maintain a business continuity plan and test them on an annual basis. I believe this helped our advisors maintain service and communications with their clients in the days after the hurricane hit.

Everything You Need to Know About Foraging for Food in the Wild.

You'd be surprised what you can eat out there. The wilderness is full of edible plants and creatures for the survivalist who knows where to look, and few people know this better than the contestants on the History Channel's show Alone, where survivalists compete to stay out in the wilderness for the longest with no outside assistance. It begins its third season tonight at 9 p.m. ET.

First thing's first: Don't eat anything unless you know what it is, especially plants. If you can't identify it, don't eat it. You should not only have a book to identify editable vegetation, but also take survival courses with experts who know the area before you start foraging for food in the wild. Here are some more tips from the survivalists of Alone about what to eat if you find yourself stranded in the wilderness.

The Only 4 Things You Need to Survive in the Wild.

If you want to know how to survive in the woods or wilderness, then the first thing you need to know is this: always be prepared. You don’t want to be caught without supplies. Never go for even a “short walk” in the woods without bringing a fire starter, knife, water, and rain jacket. Even if you don’t plan on going into the wilderness, you still need to be prepared with survival gear. Keep a car emergency kit in your vehicle in case you break down on remote road. Keep a bug out bag packed in case you need to flee.

But you can’t always be prepared for everything. Take the case of Autumn Veatch, the teenager who survived a plane crash and then days in the wilderness – despite having no supplies and being injured. It isn’t just plane crashes which could leave you stranded in the wilderness with nothing. You could go for a hike, fall into a river, and have all of your gear wash away. Or you might get abducted by a nutcase and have to escape your abductor through the woods (yes, this has happened many times).   The bottom line is that you need to be prepared for anything by knowing how to survive in the wilderness.

7 Tips for Applying Bug Spray Properly.

To fight off mosquitoes and ticks—and avoid the diseases they can spread—you need an effective insect repellent. But even the best bug spray won’t help much if you don’t apply it properly. And though repellents are generally safe, even for pregnant women and children, that’s true only if you put them on correctly.

“A quick, absent-minded spray won’t provide enough protection,” says Joan Muratore, who leads insect repellent testing here at Consumer Reports. “But too much, or applying bug spray in the wrong way, may pose risks, especially for young children,” she says.
You should always follow instructions on the product label, Muratore says. But that’s not the only thing to keep in mind. We spoke with experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their best advice on how to safely and effectively apply bug spray.

The Best Survival Guns You Could Ever Own.

One of the most important elements of prepping, along with food, water and first aid, is security. A disaster scenario will be a dangerous time for you and your family, so you must be prepared to protect them. In order to do it you must have the necessary tools to do so, and there’s no denying that the weapon of our era is the gun.

While having just one firearm is a major improvement over having no gun, if you really want to complete your survival arsenal, you’ll need several guns, ones specialized for specific purposes. The best gun for home-defense is not necessarily the best gun for hunting, for example.
In this article, I’m going to show you six specific guns that should be in your arsenal, the areas they excel in, and the reasons to own each.

9 Ways Bourbon Could Save Your Life

For more than 200 years, American bourbon has spread from its birthplace in the mountains of Kentucky throughout the country and beyond. Though the details of this liquor’s origin story are often conflicting, original bourbon distillers were likely Scottish and Irish settlers who craved their familiar, Old World whiskey and adapted their ancient recipes to New World ingredients such as corn.

No ordinary moonshine, bourbon is aged in new charred oak casks until it has a amber color and a fiery but smooth finish. People have (and still do) make their living by creating this fine beverage, but can bourbon actually be used for more than just having a drink with your buddies? Can it be a lifesaving survival supply? The answer is yes. Here’s how.

This article is about lightweight, takedown rifles that you might use to survive in the wilderness if things go really wrong. After the crash of a bush plane far from civilization, for example, or on a wilderness canoe, kayak, or raft trip after your boat is damaged beyond repair and you must either walk a great distance to safety or survive for an extended period of time before help can be expected to arrive. These are the firearms that you might use for subsistence hunting to help fend off starvation during such an ordeal.
