Raw honey has many benefits!

Raw honey has been used throughout history for the health benefits and medical uses. It’s even used in some hospitals as a treatment for wounds. Many of these health benefits are specific to raw, or unpasteurized, honey. Most of the honey you find in grocery stores is pasteurized. The high heat kills unwanted yeast, can improve the color and texture, removes any crystallization, and extends the shelf life. Many of the beneficial nutrients are also destroyed in the process. Here is a couple of those things. I was surprised about some of these benefits.
  Boosts Memory
The sweet nectar is loaded in antioxidants that may help prevent cellular damage and loss within the brain. A 2011 study published in Menopause found a daily spoonful of Malaysian honey may boost postmenopausal women’s memory, which can provide an alternative therapy for the hormone-related intellectual decline.

Honey’s ability to help the body absorb calcium, helps aid brain health. The brain needs calcium in order to process thought and make decisions. As our populations continue to get older and older, the likelihood of dementia setting in because of poor intake of vitamins and minerals continues to get higher and higher.

Coughing
Honey can be the all-natural cure when it comes to pesky colds. A persistent cough that won’t go away can easily be remedied with two teaspoons of honey.Children between the ages of 1 and 5 with nighttime cough due to colds coughed less frequently when they received two teaspoons of honey 30 minutes before bed. The golden liquid’s thick consistency helps coat the throat while the sweet taste is believed to trigger nerve endings that protect the throat from incessant coughing.

Natural Energy Source
Raw honey contains natural sugars (80 percent), water (18 percent), and minerals, vitamins, pollen and protein (2 percent). It’s not surprising that honey has been called “the perfect running fuel.” It provides an easily absorbed supply of energy in the form of liver glycogen, making it ideal for energetic morning starts and as a pre- and post-exercise energy source.

Diabetes Aid
Consumption of raw honey can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and help aid medication used to treat diabetes. The combination of raw honey and cinnamon can be especially beneficial to healthy blood sugar management, as well as many other health concerns like gingivitis and acne.

Controls Cholesterol
High cholesterol is a daunting health problem that should be dealt adequately and on time. Many studies have proved that honey is a healthy source to control high cholesterol levels. A study has even mentioned that consuming 70g of honey regularly for 30 days can reduce these levels by 3%. Surprisingly, with the help of the honey, you can increase good cholesterol levels.

It Promotes Sleep
Sleeping 8 hours without any disruption is extremely important for your well being. This is why; experts and dietitians suggest getting plenty of sleep and rest to combat health problems. However, not getting enough sleep can put your health at various risks.  It is where consuming it comes into an action. Eating a tablespoon of it before bedtime is recommended to insomniacs. This way, their liver glycogen stays up because if they get empty, your liver stops glucose formation, which is essential for producing energy. This process is said to prevent you from falling asleep as you should.

There is a lot more things that you can use honey besides eating it. Here are just a couple I thought was interesting.

Can you get sunburn in the winter?

Yes…..Most of us associate the summer sun for sunburns. But you can get severe sunburns during the winter months too.  On a cloudy day 86% of the sun’s rays can penetrate through to the ground. The suns rays burn you not the heat. The worst sunburns happen when you least expect them.

UV rays (ultraviolet radiation) are produced by the sun. This is what changes our skin color. As a result this creates a tan, or a  burn on skin. Long term overexposure can case different kind of skin cancer.

There are two types of UV rays to be aware of:

UVB ray exposure is the cause of the immediate change in skin color.  Depending on the degree of exposure, we either get a tan or a burn.

UVA ray exposure penetrates deep into the skin.  These rays are a product not just of direct sun but of all natural light, capable of reaching the skin through glass, clouds and smog.  These are the rays that can be found in tanning beds.

The estimated cost for a solar panel system on you house.

How much it would cost to install enough photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on a house building to generate one’s own electrical energy?
The average house in the USA, consumes electricity at the rate of 1 kW per hour (kWh). There are about 730 hours in each month, and the average price of a kWh of electricity is $0.10. Your monthly bill would be around $73 for 730 kWh of electricity. This can vary considerably if you have items such as a hot-tub, or some electrical appliances running continuously. Extended use, plasma screen TVs, computers and video games consoles can also make an impact. Your usage will significantly increase in months when you run an air conditioning unit. The cost of electricity varies widely across the USA, from as low as $0.07/kWh in West Virginia to as much as $0.24/kWh in Hawaii.

A conservative value to use as a solar panel’s generating capacity is 10 watts/sq. ft. This represents a panel conversion efficiency of about 12%, which is typical. This means that for every kW you generate, you need about 100 sq. ft. of solar panels. If the sun shined 24 hours a day, you could put up 100 sq. ft. of panels and have enough energy to power the average home. The sun is available only during daylight hours, and the amount available per day is highly dependent on the extent of cloud cover.

Also, the length of each day is dependent on the season. It average  from around 3 hours per day in places like Seattle and Pittsburgh, to 5 or 6 hours per day in states like Colorado and California, to a high of 7 hours per day in Arizona. What that means is that the size of the panel array required can vary, anywhere from 400 sq. ft. to 800 sq. ft. (i.e., 4 kW to 8 kW), depending on where you live. You’ll need more panels if you live in a location that gets less sunshine per day, and fewer if you live in a location that gets more.

The way to evaluate solar panel system cost is cost-per-watt, or dollars-per-watt. It’s calculated by taking the total cost to install the system (parts and labor), and dividing by how much power it produces (electrical output).

So this is what the estimate installed cost of solar panels is, between $7-$9 per watt: A 5 kW system would cost around $25,000-$35,000. This is just an estimate. Many utility companies offer incentives, and some subsidize as much as 50% of system costs. Even at half the cost, though, a system that generates an average $75 of electricity per month could take a long time to pay for itself.

This is a lot of money to put out at one time be it might be worth it in the long run.

How to fight the common cold

If you wake up in the morning and your throat is scratchy. Your nose is runny and your normal high energy is nowhere to be found.

Yes, these are early signs that you’re coming down with something. You should listen to your body when you feel a cold coming on.

If you feel tired, overworked, sad, or angry, those emotions can sink your mood. That can slow your immune system just when you need it running at full power to fight the cold virus.Get all the sleep you can. Get a handle on your stress -- it can quickly send a cold into high gear.

Usually when you feel a cold coming on, your immune system jumps is fights the virus. To give your immune system a charge, do something that relaxes you: Listen to music, meditate, or do a light workout. And don’t forget to rest. Your body needs that, too.

Drink Up
It’s no fun to have to blow your nose or walk around with a head full of thick gunk. If this sounds like you, fluids are your friend. Keep a full glass close by. Any fluid -- besides alcohol and dark colored sodas -- will count toward keeping you hydrated. But plain water is best.

Hot Tea and Honey
Drinking warm liquids helps to open up your stuffy nose and soothe a sore throat. Hot tea with a dollop of honey can help quiet a cough. Mom had it right after all But. Don’t give honey to children under a year old. It can make them very sick.

The world’s first heated sleeping bag

The simple sleeping bag the pasted. The future sleeping bag is here. The Outdoor company PDG Summit Gear just released its first product: an electric sleeping bag. The Calor 1.0,  is the world’s first heated sleeping bag.  The warmth comes from a palm-sized, rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack that can heat the bag up to 137 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's’ simple to use. There’s a multi-function button near the head of the bed, where you can control the temperature by turning the heat on and off. The bag itself is constructed with ultra-light synthetic materials and water-resistant components to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. For an extra bonus, it’s also machine-washable.

The biggest factor in the way of a good night’s rest often comes down to staying warm. A typical sleeping bag is designed to trap your body heat in to keep you warm. The science is pretty straight forward. The outdoor market is  flooded with different types of sleeping bags, they come in all sorts of insulation types, shapes, and sizes — from mummy bags for backpackers to a double bag that is intended to be shared with a partner.

The Calor 1.0  bag is available for purchase on the company’s website. One goes for $185 and comes with a dry bag compression stuff sack.

This is going to be something I am willing to try!

Tiny Houses: Fad or Evolution

Many people that wanted to downsize or simplify their lives moved into gated communities of small multifamily homes or they bought or built smaller homes. Homes in the 800 to 1,200 sq ft just 5 years ago were thought of as “cramped.”

So what brought Tiny Houses to the forefront so quickly? Was it the search for affordable housing? Or maybe the tiny house movement was started by Millennials wanting to have their own type of housing.

And what is a tiny house? Generally it’s considered any small livable structure under 500 sq ft. That would imply that travel trailers, park model homes, 8’ wide houses built on utility trailers, converted garden and storage sheds, auxiliary dwelling units, tree houses, small mobile homes (HUD) and even yurts, straw bale and 3D Printed homes would all qualify.

84 Lumber has started marketing and selling modified storage sheds as livable and they even showed a Tiny House kit at last year’s IBS in Orlando. TV shows that feature tiny house living have begun and thrived because of their popularity. Tiny House expos are popping up all over the US showcasing these homes, some of these homes costing over $100,000.

Clayton Homes, Iron Town Homes and other manufactured and modular factories are entering this market but as yet none are building yurts.

Tiny House communities are starting to be developed in many areas.

Two things have come to light recently about the Tiny House movement I found interesting. First, some of the earliest tiny house inhabitants are having a hard time living within the small space and are opting out. Secondly, when people talk about tiny houses, they tend to defend one type over others and the whole thing is becoming political but without the riots and name calling.

Tiny houses represent a fringe movement that can teach us about the value of lifestyle and its relationship to home but it is unlikely to have much impact the housing industry at large.

Here are some of the most common types of Tiny and Small Houses:

Less than 200 sq ft on wheels:

More than 200 sq ft on wheels:

Sheds and kits:

Park Models:

Auxiliary Dwelling Units (ADU):

Tree Houses:

Yurts, Straw Bale and 3D printed:

Converted Shipping Containers:

So, If your trying to down size or looking for a good home to put in your Bug- Out- location, don't forget about Tiny Houses. It might fit your needs better than a conventional house.

Why you need survival weapons

Survival weapons are a necessity when it comes to camping, nature hikes, practicing bushcraft, hunting or even prepping for an apocalyptic catastrophe to occur.  There are several different types of weapons, and reasons as to why you should maintain and possess a quality amount of them.
With pistols and rifles, though effective for hunting and self defense, you come into a problem of limited use if you do not have the ability or know how to create your own ammo.  They are also very loud if you don’t want to give away your position.
