Are You Just Asking for Someone to Break into Your Home?

It really doesn’t matter if you live in a bad or good part of town, in the country with few neighbors or in the middle of nowhere, somebody has had their eyes on your place as a possible burglary target.

Unless you’re a total Prepper ready for just about any eventuality, both natural or man made, you are probably more vulnerable than you think. Here are some of the things that can draw burglars tight to your house:

  • Overgrown shrubbery and/or high fences that will allow the burglar to work unseen.
  • No evidence of any security devices
  • Don’t leave any door unlocked even if you’re at home. Burglars really don’t want to break in. They would rather find an unlocked door.
  • Leaving your curtains and drapes open at night with the lights on. You might as well invite them in to see your brand new state of the art $2,000 70” TV up close.
  • If you’ve just moved into your new place, change the locks.
  • Don’t hide your spare house key under that fake rock on your porch. Do you really think burglars are stupid?
  • Don’t use an automatic timer for room lights that come on at dusk and go off at sunrise. Who stays up all night with the lights on? Burglars know you’re probably on vacation.
  • Don’t put up a “Dog on Guard” sign if you don’t actually have a dog. Burglars know if you actually have a dog as there is usually evidence of a dog’s presence. Barking as they walk past your home or those telltale brown spots in your yard.
  • There are no motion detector lights
  • Your sidewalk isn’t shoveled 48 hours after a snow storm. Almost all cities and towns have ordinances about having sidewalks shoveled within 12 hours.

And remember, “Locks only keep honest people from breaking in.”
